'It's Coming From Inside the House!': Watch 'The Thing' With MoPOP!

At 7 p.m. PT this Friday, March 27 the Museum of Pop Culture invites horror fans (and everyone else who's stuck self-quarantining at home) to join Robert Rutherford, MoPOP's Manager of Public Engagement, for our first film watchalong. This week, we'll host a discussion and viewing party on Zoom with a focus on John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece, The Thing.

Pulled from our list of 100 Horror Films to See Before You DieThe Thing follows a research team in Antarctica that's hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. Starring Kurt Russell as R.J. MacReady, The Thing is particularly scary because of the inherent paranoia and mistrust the film's characters feel upon learning of the alien's ability to shift into any living form. Compounding that fear is the crew's isolated environment, which adds an extra level of stir-craziness to the mix (sound familiar?).

Here's a handful of program elements you can expect to see this Friday night:

  • Pre-film introduction featuring exclusive interview footage with film director John Carpenter
  • R.J. MacReady cosplay
  • Cocktail/mocktail recipes
  • DIY flamethrower crafts
  • Post-film discussion on the movie's themes
  • Other general weirdness (Robert's been in quarantine all week)

If you happen to own a copy of the film, get it queued up! Otherwise, here's where you can find The Thing online:

So download or dust off your copy and join us on Zoom at 7 p.m. PT!
