Museum Week 2020: 7 Days, 7 Themes, 7 Hashtags

If you thought festival season was canceled, think again.

MuseumWeek is this week (May 11-17) and the Museum of Pop Culture will join institutions worldwide in the annual online cultural event. While it may not offer the same vibes as enjoying your favorite artists under the spring and summer sun, MuseumWeek is billed as a "worldwide festival" for museums on social media.

This year, the seven-day program centers on the celebration of seven unique themes using seven different hashtags. Here's a look at what the MuseumWeek social media schedule includes:

  • Monday, May 11—#heroesMW: A day devoted to all the people on the front lines performing essential jobs to help in the fight against COVID-19 + a way for museums to explore the concept of heroes in arts and culture.
  • Tuesday, May 12—#CultureInQuarantineMW: Inspired by the #ArtInQuarantine initiative of the Getty Museum, museums will invite audiences to re-create cultural works with objects and people from their own homes.
  • Wednesday, May 13—#togetherMW: The flagship theme of MuseumWeek2020 and a tribute to collectivity, community, and joint efforts.
  • Thursday, May 14—#MuseumMomentsMW: Museums will recall the best moments from their institutions + encourage visitors to share favorite memories.
  • Friday, May 15—#climateMW: Museums will make audiences aware of the climate crisis by exploring aspects of the theme that concern us all.
  • Saturday, May 16—#TechnologyMW: Museums will share how they're using technology to stay connected with visitors during this uncertain time.
  • Sunday, May 17—#dreamsMW: Museums will explore this rich theme with their audiences, inviting them to dream of a better world.

So, there you have it, all the themes for MuseumWeek 2020. Be sure to follow us on social media to see how we're joining the MuseumWeek conversation, or check back on this post throughout the week for direct links to content as it becomes available.
