Member Moments: Leslie and Trevor Moon

As part of our celebration honoring 20 years of the Museum of Pop Culture, we'll take time throughout 2020 to get to know some of MoPOP's most dedicated visitors and supporters.

MoPOP members receive some pretty cool perks, but perhaps more importantly, each member's continued support of our nonprofit museum helps fund our world-class exhibitions and community programming. This month we hear from Leslie Moon, who along with her son Trevor were among the first members to be welcomed back to our building after reopening our doors. Trevor’s treasured Bear (from Jim Henson’s Bear in the Big Blue House) goes everywhere with them and joined them for a day at the museum!

How long have you been a member?

Leslie: "We officially joined as members in 2017 when The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited started because I knew we would be there every weekend considering how unbelievably obsessed my son is with all things Jim Henson! While the exhibition was up I don’t think we missed but a handful of Saturdays! Prior to us joining we would attend once or twice a year and Trevor would also go with his special needs summer camp once or twice as well."

Do you have any favorite exhibitions or artifacts?

Leslie: "In addition to loving the Henson exhibition, Trevor also took an immediate liking to Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic and Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film. He absolutely loves the list of 100 Horror Films To See Before You Die! I have loved so many exhibitions, Mick Rock’s Bowie photographs and Pearl Jam: Home and Away."

What makes MoPOP special to you?

Leslie: "Trevor loves music, art, and film! As do I. He is living with severe autism and has repetitive behaviors such as rocking, flapping, and jumping along with loud vocalizations which make going to most other cultural places extremely difficult. He’s always been welcomed with open arms and big smiles every time we are at MoPOP!"

Thank you for joining us for our members reopening weekend. We’re so excited our doors are finally open again! Can you tell us about your visit?

Leslie: "When the shutdown happened I had to drive Trevor to MoPOP because he didn’t believe me that it was closed. It took quite a few weeks for him to stop asking to go every week. When I received the email that you were reopening it was one of the happiest days we’ve had in months! We were among the first people to walk into that fabulous building and even though he was wearing a mask I knew the smile on his face was ear to ear!!! Looking forward to continuing being a member for years to come!!"
