The mid-December 1984 issue of Analog was a “spoof” issue, and featured fake advertisements as well as stories featuring the character Kelvin Throop. Originated in 1964 by R. A. J. Phillips, Throop is a humorous figure shared by a number of authors and is best known for railing against bureaucracy and telling the unvarnished truth about the world.

Gaughan, a 2015 SFFHOF inductee who won Hugo Awards for Best Professional Artist and Best Fan Artist in 1967, would typically send publishers a few preliminary “comp” paintings to choose from, each with a different approach. His “Hostages of Zark” painting illustrates the short story by Charles Sheffield.
