MoPOP's new virtual student clubs offer an opportunity for students to connect while remaining safely apart! Ages 11-18 are invited to engage with fellow students who share interests, solve creative challenges together, and explore MoPOP's content wherever they are.

Be sure to check out the details for our next student club offering: a virtual Cosplay Club launching in February 2021!

If you're passionate about costumes, crafting, fandoms, or learning new skills, MoPOP’s upcoming cosplay club is the opportunity for you!

Join us biweekly beginning February 10 for six weeks of collaborative creativity as we explore the art of cosplay. Each meeting will focus on a different element of cosplay: costume building, makeup, wig styling, and more. At the end of the club, participants will have a fully formed cosplay costume and themed PPE facemask as club members learn from professional cosplayers leading demos and answering questions on the elements of cosplay.

May Hemmer

Today, we get to know one of the professional cosplayers students will learn from in MoPOP's club: May Hemmer, who on March 24 will lead a hair, makeup, and wigs workshop.

May Hemmer has been cosplaying for as long as she can remember! It all started when her mother would dress her up in cute outfits and costumes from her parents’ deployment in Japan. It was at the age of 5 years old that her aunt began to teach her how to sew! Not just costuming but for clothing in general. As she grew older, she began to take classes when she could or when her mother could afford it. May continued sewing and cosplaying all throughout high school and college, but took a small hiatus post graduation only to get back into things after getting settled with her new husband and her growing family!

She stepped away from a life of corporate banking to focus on her two kids, husband, and her art of cosplay, costuming, and wigs! Why? She wanted to not only fully dive back into her life of art, theatre, and sewing, but to be a shining example to her kids on what it means to be a nerd in general. Cosplaying is a form of self expression and that is what she loves about it. Not only can you express yourself, but you can display your love for your fandom and favorite characters. Cosplay knows no ethnicity, no gender—that is what May wants to share with all!

Whether you’re an avid cosplayer or you’re just dipping your toe into the world, we invite you to explore MoPOP's Cosplay Virtual Student Club.
