Joseph Thompson is an assistant professor of history at Mississippi State University. His forthcoming manuscript “Sounding Southern: Music, Militarism, and the Making of the Sunbelt,” traces the economic and symbolic connections between the country music industry and the U.S. Defense Department during the Cold War. His work has appeared in the journals Southern Cultures and American Quarterly, as well as the edited collection Reconsidering Southern Labor History.
