MoPOP Unveils its Upcoming Exhibition: Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA

text: Hidden Worlds The Films of LAIKA, girl character with blue hair featured

Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA, opening March 17, 2023, is the biggest exhibition ever about the legendary stop-motion animation studio with Oscar® nominated films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. This exclusive collection features never-before-seen artifacts, immersive displays, interactives, and a sneak peek at the forthcoming Wildwood, the studio’s sixth stop-motion feature.

Why continue to explore stop-motion in these digital days? LAIKA understands the emotion of going on a journey that the heroes—whatever they may be made of—have actually experienced. Nothing can compare to real light falling on texture and contour, the true interplay of character and environment. So what does it take to build a world that fills your heart? Craft. By utilizing—and often inventing—new technologies, the dedicated craftspeople of LAIKA build complete, exquisite worlds for their stories to live and breathe in, twenty-four frames a second. Are there limits to the possibilities of stop-motion animation? Perhaps. But LAIKA proves with every film that no one is even close to finding them.

LAIKA made these worlds. You fell in love with them. Come inside and see them up close, down to the tiniest button-eyed detail. Their world just might transform yours.
