Explore the world of folklore and fantasy with MOPOP’s upcoming special exhibition, Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form. This limited-time exhibition journeys through the rich, multifaceted world of Asian visual storytelling, paying homage to its historical roots while exploring new age digital innovations. Discover a myriad of key creators, characters, and publications—ranging from rare Japanese woodblock prints and traditional graphic narratives to iconic Japanese anime and manga.

In collaboration with the Barbican Center, MOPOP is proud to announce our upcoming special exhibition, Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form.

This exhibition features an array of immersive experiences that showcase the boundless creativity and cultural depth of Asian graphic art. Highlights include:

  • Over 400 global artworks, marking the largest-ever collection of original Asian comics
  • A manga anthology reading station
  • A replica of Takashi Fukutani’s studio and a motion-capture installation featuring a giant robot, inspired by the renowned mecha robots from 1980s and 1990s manga
  • A broadcast performance of virtual pop star Hatsune Miku
  • Cosplay creations by local artists, including Kitkatwombat’s Yukari Hayasaka and Stephanie Piper’s Oscar François de Jarjayes
