For our next film series, "Grow Up!" MoPOP is exploring adolescence in all its lusty, zitty, complicated glory. We’ll be celebrating movies from all over the genre map that show just how joyful and confounding being a teenager can be.
At 4 p.m. PT this Sunday, September, 6, you're invited to join MoPOP Production Associate Kasi Gaarenstroom and special guests Roxana Hadadi & Krystal Kiran for an online watchalong and discussion of the 2002 cult classic Bend it Like Beckham.
Here are a handful of program elements you can expect to see:
ABOUT ROXANA HADADI
Roxana Hadadi writes about film, television, and culture with sides of judgment and thirst. Her writing has been published by The A.V. Club, RogerEbert.com, Crooked Marquee, The Playlist, Bright Wall/Dark Room, and Chesapeake Family magazine. She is a member of the DC Area Film Critics Association, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and the Online Film Critics Society, and a Tomatometer-approved critic on Rotten Tomatoes. She lives in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland.
ABOUT KRYSTAL KIRAN
Krystal Kiran is a multi-disciplinary performing artist (actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, teacher, director) who made her Broadway debut at the age of nineteen, making her the youngest South Asian woman to perform on Broadway.
In addition to several film & television credits, some of Krystal’s select stage credits include Bombay Dreams (Original Broadway Cast), Lord of the Rings, West Side Story, Monsoon Wedding, two seasons at the Shaw Festival and, most recently, performer, cultural consultant and assistant choreographer for Gurinder Chadha’s musical adaptation of her hit film Bend it Like Beckham. Krystal’s body of work exemplifies the niche she has carved for herself as an expert of merging the authenticity of Eastern (Indian) & Western culture through dance, musical theatre, stage & screen performance, and the arts.
As a teacher, Krystal has taught dance to students of all ages all over the world and is a registered yoga and meditation therapist. She is currently offering online dance and yoga classes with the intention to build an inclusive online community from around the world by practicing dance, yoga and meditation together to lift our individual and collective vibration.
As with all of our virtual watchalongs, to participate you'll need to register in advance, and then on event day make sure you have a copy of the film queued up and ready to watch on your end while keeping an eye on your e-mail inbox for a link to join our online discussion.
If you happen to own a copy of the film, get it queued up at 4 p.m. PT this Sunday! Otherwise, here's where you can find Bend it Like Beckham online:
