GOALS
PROGAM OUTLINE
Guest Curators work closely with MOPOP Collections and Curatorial staff to select objects and oral histories from the MOPOP Permanent Collection to create a small exhibition on the topic(s) of their choosing. Curators create the exhibition text and any audio/visual components in their own curatorial voice. The exhibition can be related to existing exhibitions, programs, or contain standalone content. Working closely with MOPOP Curators, Exhibition Design, and Collections, the Guest Curator creates layouts for their casework with opportunities to learn more about mounting and exhibition floorplan creation. They are provided with hands-on installation experience as well as the chance to work closely with the MOPOP Marketing team.

We look forward to receiving your exciting proposals and collaborating with you to shape the future of pop culture exhibitions at MOPOP!
If you have additional questions or concerns regarding the program, please feel free to contact us at guestcuratorprogram@mopop.org
This unique program is designed for emerging curators and creatives who are early in their museum careers and looking to grow their skills in a supportive, friendly, hands-on environment. You may be a student, recent graduate, independent curator, artist, or cultural worker with an interest in exhibition design and storytelling. We’re especially excited about applicants who are passionate about pop culture and curious about how MOPOP exhibitions come together from concept to installation.
We’re looking for exhibition ideas that feel fresh, thoughtful, and grounded in the variety of MOPOP’s artifacts. In the past, the strongest proposals have often made meaningful connections that highlight underrepresented stories and perspectives within pop culture. We’re especially interested in ideas that engage in both cultural history and contemporary conversations. Your proposal doesn’t need to be fully formed, but it should be focused, clear, and communicate why your idea matters.
Yes, working with MOPOP’s permanent collection and oral histories is a central part of the program. We’re interested in how you creatively interpret and reimagine the collection to tell new stories in new ways. Strong applicants demonstrate flexibility and curiosity, thinking critically about how existing MOPOP objects can be used in unexpected or meaningful ways to build strong engagement with our visitors. Feel free to explore MOPOP’s online collections portal as you develop ideas for your proposal!
A strong application clearly communicates your ideas, perspective, and curatorial voice. We’re looking for proposals that are intentional and engaging, with writing that is both professional and accessible to a broad public audience. It’s important to demonstrate how you think about storytelling, audience experience, and collaboration. You don’t need to have all the answers as this is also a mentorship opportunity, but we want to see your curiosity, critical thinking, and excitement for the field.
You don’t need extensive museum experience to apply, but we do prefer applicants with some museum or art history experience. As application cycles are highly competitive, we’re more interested in your potential, creativity, and point of view than a long list of credentials. Your experience can come from a variety of places, including academic work, community projects, creative practice, or independent curation. What matters most is how you bring those experiences into your curatorial thinking for the program.
This project can be performed remotely, but to receive a full hands-on experience it is best recommended for local applicants to apply. Remote participants are ideally able to travel to Seattle for the installation phase.
As a Guest Curator, over the span of eight months, you’ll collaborate closely with MOPOP’s Curatorial, Collections, Exhibits, and Marketing teams to develop and realize a small-scale exhibition. This includes researching and selecting objects, writing exhibition text, contributing to design and layout decisions, and participating in the installation process. You may also have opportunities to engage with the public through programs, talks, or digital content, making this a fully immersive experience from concept to completion.
