The adventure puzzle game Myst was the top-selling computer game from 1993 to 2002; its surreal and visionary computer graphics transcended that of other games on the market and was influential in increasing the popularity of the CD-ROM format.
Brothers Robyn and Rand Miller designed Myst after creating several interactive storybooks for children. In the game, the player enters the mythical world of Myst where they explore and solve puzzles to unlock the storyline. The game features immersive graphics and non-linear gameplay. Ambient music and sounds strongly contribute to the atmosphere, as well as provide clues. There are several possible endings based on the player’s ethical decisions.
Myst was instantly popular after being released. Originally programmed for the Macintosh platform, the game has since been adapted to numerous gaming and operating systems. Four sequels followed, starting with Riven (1997), Myst III: Exile (2001), Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (2003), Myst IV: Revelation (2004), and Myst V: End of Ages (2005).
