I.C.Y.M.I.: 'Star Trek' Announces New Series, 'Star Wars' Shares Virtual Ride, RuPaul Joins 'The Price Is Right' & More

Greetings, fellow pop culture aficionados, and welcome to week 14 of our I.C.Y.M.I. (In Case You Missed It) blog series. Our museum may be temporarily closed to visitors based on guidance from public health officials to slow the spread of coronavirus, but we're still here to recap a handful of trending tidbits from the past week(s) in popular culture, in case you missed them.
Last Friday, we shed light on a handful of records set in the pop culture world, from rapper Watsky's longest continuous freestyle to Game of Thrones' 'The Mountain' deadlifting more than 1,100 pounds. This week, we're fixated on sci-fi, starting with a couple nuggets from Star Trek and Star Wars (just don't ask us to name the better franchise).
Hit It!
A new Star Trek series is coming to CBS! Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes fans aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for a new show featuring stars Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), Ethan Peck (Spock), and Rebecca Romijn (Number One), who excitedly broke the news earlier this week.
"We're going to get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future," says Mount. "And I guess there's only one more thing to say: Hit it!"
Join The Resistance
I'm admittedly a little late to the party on this one, but it's too fun not to share. In honor of Star Wars Day back on May the 4th, Disney gave fans of the franchise a new way to experience one of its most popular rides at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. A virtual ride of the theme park's galactic adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, was released, and the three-and-a-half minute immersive experience is sure to bring a smile to your face. Check it out in the video above (for full effect, expand the clip to fit your entire screen!).
RuPaul, Come On Down!
Iconic game show The Price is Right welcomed RuPaul as a celebrity guest this past week. The Drag Race host appeared alongside other contestants and assisted them throughout the show, helping raise nearly $100,000 for Planned Parenthood in the process.
Meet The Musicians Behind The Animal Crossing Theme
Last week, our staff outlined their favorite characters from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the wholesome and delightful video game for Nintendo Switch that has swept some of our MoPOP team members—and the pop culture world at large—off their feet. This week, the musicians behind the title's main theme song came together for a virtual performance, which you can enjoy in the video above.
What Else To Watch/Do/Catch Up On This Weekend
- A long list of comedians and actors came together to deliver a cover of Weird Al Yankovic's "Eat It"
- More spicy screengrabs from the new Dune film were released this week (bonus: join us Monday, May 18 for a watchalong + discussion of the original film!)
- Our It's Coming From Inside the House! horror watchalong series continues tonight with Halloween III: Season of the Witch and again next Friday, May 22 with The Lost Boys. Register for both programs at MoPOP.org/Movies
- This Sunday marks the 11th anniversary of Minecraft, and our friends at Living Computers: Museum + Labs are hosting an all-day celebration on their servers.
