SEATTLE - February 15, 2024 –  The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its latest permanent exhibition, Massive: The Power of Pop Culture, on March 15, 2024. This exhibition is the first installment of the museum's larger annual content theme, The Power of Pop Culture, which will examine pop culture via five lenses.

  1. Activism
  2. Global culture
  3. Preservation
  4. Scholarship
  5. Accessibility

The Massive exhibition will explore how pop culture has a remarkable ability to shape our perceptions, influence our choices, and connect us through shared enthusiasm by allowing visitors to examine pop culture both in the present moment and through the lens of history. Showing approximately 85 artifacts, interactives, films, and immersive experiences ranging from the Star Wars to Beyoncé and video games to the rise of K-POP, this long-term exhibition will provide visitors with a dynamic exploration of the global influence of pop culture and its profound impact on our daily lives.

"We are excited to present Massive: The Power of Pop Culture as a cornerstone of the MoPOP experience," said Michele Y. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of MoPOP. "This exhibition encourages visitors to explore their own place within pop culture, bringing their lived experiences and fandoms into conversation with the museum and their communities."

The exhibition unpacks concepts such as why representation matters, appreciation versus appropriation, inspiration and imitation, and the nature of fame and celebrity. It also centers MoPOP's dedication to community engagement with ongoing opportunities for staff, volunteers, and guest curators and artists to contribute content and create experiences that pull from MoPOP's permanent collection and reflect their own personal pop culture journey. Massive: The Power of Pop Culture showcases why preserving, providing access, and providing context for the objects and narratives of pop culture is key to understanding where we have collectively been and where we are going.

"Massive serves as a primer for how MoPOP approaches pop culture and focuses on our permanent collection, highlighting many diverse stories, showcasing new acquisitions, and creating a dynamic, dedicated space for community collaborations and engagement," said Jacob McMurray, Chief Collections + Exhibitions Officer at MoPOP.
