I.C.Y.M.I.: Emmy Awards 2020 Recap - 'Schitt's Creek,' Zendaya Make History & More

Greetings, fellow pop culture aficionados, and welcome to week 33 of our I.C.Y.M.I. (In Case You Missed It) blog series, where we recap a handful of trending tidbits from the past week(s) in popular culture, in case you missed them.

2020 Emmy Awards Recap

Last weekend, comedian Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 2020 Emmy Awards to an almost empty Staples Center (taking a play from the sporting world, there were a handful of celebrity cardboard cutouts in attendance), while the nominees watched from home.

"What's happening tonight is not important. It's not going to stop COVID, it's not going to put out the fires," Kimmel noted in his opening monologue. "But it's fun, and right now, we need fun."

On top of it being the Emmys' first-ever socially distanced ceremony, the 72nd primetime event featured a handful of other notable firsts, including Schitt's Creek becoming the first series to win every major comedy award and 24-year-old Zendaya becoming the youngest winner of lead actress in a drama series for her role in Euphoria.

"It's obviously a very emotional moment, and I still can't believe it myself, it's pretty crazy," Zendaya said. "...I'm just grateful for moments like this. Moments where we can have joy. ... It's moments like this that we really have to all hold onto and cherish."

Remembering Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

You've no doubt seen the news by now; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed last Friday due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg, who was 87, taught us all an important lesson about how to harness our own innate power and creativity—something we celebrate every day at MoPOP. Her passing was noted across the pop culture world, with Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon, who played Ginsburg on SNL, offering: "For so many of us, Justice Ginsburg was a real-life superhero: a beacon of hope, a warrior for justice, a robed crusader who saved the day time and again. Playing her on SNL was a profound joy because I could always feel the overwhelming love and gratitude that the audience had for her. It was one of the great honors of my life to meet Justice Ginsburg, to shake her hand, and to thank her for her lifetime of service to this country."
